Swim Meet 101
What to Bring
- Wear team swimsuit.
- Cap, goggles (an extra pair of goggles is a good idea!), team t-shirt (write name on tag!), 2+ towels. Make sure all items are well labeled with your child's name.
- Sunscreen - it will be sunny for much of the meet.
- Plenty of healthy snacks and water to keep your swimmer hydrated and energized. (There will be plenty of candy at the concession stand - we like to pack fruit (berries, orange slices, banana, watermelon), goldfish, turkey or beef jerky, PB&J).
- Activities for your child for time in between events (cards, books, travel games) - It's a swim meet - these will get wet - please don't bring ipads/tablets, library books, etc. unless you're okay with them getting soaked or risking a drink being spilled on them)
- Folding camp chairs - the regular pool chairs won't be on the deck.
- SwimTopia App. Use this or the heat sheet emailed to you before the meet to mark your child’s arm with their events. All the events and swimmers are listed on the heat sheet. You can also use the app keep track of the events in real time during the meets.
Tips
- Be early! Expect delays for parking. Check the warm-up time - not the meet start time. Meet start time is like the first pitch time.
- Warm-ups begin well before the meet start time and you'll need to time to park, find the bullpen, find a spot in the bullpen, get cap and googles on, and do any last minute arm marking if needed.
- Ensure your swimmer has sunscreen on and is marked up with his/her event information.
Upon Arrival
- Swimmers report to bull pen area.
- VOLUNTEERS: Check in with the volunteer check-in table as soon as you get to the pool - even 2nd shift. If you don't check in, we'll think we've got to find a replacement for you!
During the Meets
- WHAT YOUR SWIMMER SHOULD KNOW: First and foremost have fun! Do their best and enjoy the meet.
- Leave the coaching to the coaches and just encourage your swimmers to do their best and have fun. Focus on effort, fun, improving times vs. winning.
- If you are volunteering and leaving your swimmer especially our younger swimmers, please make sure they know where all their "stuff" is snacks, goggles, money and entertainment.
- Remind your swimmers to stay with the bullpen parents and not wander off - this can create chaos when time comes to swim. This is very important at away meets where we may be outside the pool gates.
- Our Concession stand will have a variety of foods, snacks and drinks available for purchase. You can bring in food and drinks, but no glass.
- Relays: Please don't cancel on relays, especially last minute just for convenience. If your swimmer is signed up to swim the relay and for some reason you cannot stay or make it, let the coach know immediately. A relay is 4 swimmers and if one isn't there, the whole relay team has to forfeit.
- Swimmers ages 7+ may be DQ'd (disqualified) for improper strokes. If your child is DQ'd please assure your swimmer that it is okay and how proud you are of them for trying. The coaches get a list of what the swimmer was DQ'd for and they will go over it with the swimmers in practice!
- It is a good practice for swimmers to stay in the water at the end of their races until all swimmers have touched the wall, it's respectful to other swimmers. Once all swimmers have finished the race, swimmers may exit the pool.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Our coaches and our team reps will also be able to answer questions you might have at the meet. Most importantly HAVE FUN and ENJOY the day!
- Please MARK EVERYTHING with the swimmer's name so we can avoid lost shirts, towels, caps, bathing suits, etc. The meet should finish around 9:00 PM. We encourage all parents and swimmers to stay until the end of the meet to cheer on all of our Waves.
- Have fun watching all the kids experience summer swim. Most of all, the Wexford Waves want to be known for our good sportsmanship. Please congratulate the winner no matter what team they are on, please encourage all swimmers and please encourage your swimmers to do the same. Our swimmers will follow our example.
-
T-SHIRTS: Wear the Wexford Waves team t-shirt to meets.
